By request, here is a quick comparison of MAC's
Retrospeck (Lustre finish/$14.50 for .05 oz) and Estee Lauder's Pure Color Eyeshadow in
Glistening Gold (Metallic finish/$20 for .07 oz). These are very similar shades and I would go so far as to say they are almost interchangeable. The differences are subtle--as you can see in the photos
Retrospeck is a tad warmer. They are both sheer and shimmery and useful for adding brightness and sparkle to an area, or as a quick all-over wash. I wore both today and didn't detect much of a difference in texture, pigmentation, or wear. Both have just a bit of fallout if not used over a base. At this point I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other, but maybe over time one will emerge as the winner!

I really like the Estee Lauder! It reminds me of Bare Minerals' Celestine eye shadow. It's really the only shade that I can wear with my fair skin

Hi WhatMissLoves: Welcome & thanks for commenting! I'll have to try out the Celestine next time I'm in Sephora. Bare Minerals has some very nice loose shadows :)
ReplyDeleteI really like MAC retrospect.. It's such a pretty goldish silver
ReplyDeleteBoth are pretty. But I think I like EL more.

Thanks for commenting :) They're both nice and, to be honest, on the eyes I didn't notice much of a difference between the two!
I love your first picture! There's something about cooler golds that is so pretty. I'm surprised that there's not much difference on the eyes--- Retrospeck looks a lot warmer. I guess it's a good thing though--- if I'm in the mood for gold, I can always pick up Retrospeck for a better deal =)
ReplyDeleteHi Dovey - Thanks! :) I know, I was surprised too. Although I didn't use a base/primer--maybe that would make a difference?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for doing the comparison! This is very helpful. I have Retrospeck but didn't like how grainy it looks on my eyes. I was hoping that EL Glistening Gold would be much smoother in finish. Since they are not much different from each other, I guess I'll just stick with Retrospeck for now.
ReplyDeleteAgain thank you~! You save me from wasting $20.
So glad I saw this!! I am going for the Estee Lauder one!! Thank you

Glad it was helpful :) It seems all (or most?) of MAC's lustre's have that grainy finish which can difficult to work with!
Very nice but I have a feeling Retrospeck would be more my speed. Is the part of the permanent line?
ReplyDeleteHi Lexi - Yes, Retrospeck is a permanent shade :)
ReplyDeletebtw I'm doing a fun post centered around my readers :)I hope you can stop by and decide if you want to take part!
