Hi everyone! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to post these swatches but I was summoned for jury duty, had a busy week at work, and my laptop literally fell apart at the hinges. Better late than never, right?
Here are a few photos of where I spent some time earlier this week--on the second floor of the historic Miami-Dade County Courthouse. I was reminded that, while we haven't had the military draft since 1973, jury duty service is the one remaining civic service that all U.S. citizens must fulfill, or run the risk of anything from no consequences, to being hit with hefty fines, to being held in contempt of court, or even jail time!
Built in 1925, the Miami-Dade Courthouse has 28 floors and at the time was the tallest building in Miami and in Florida! Hard to believe, right? Less than halfway through construction it was discovered that the structure was sinking into Miami's spongy ground so cement supports were installed, which are there to this day, taking up much of the space in the basement file room. Until 1961, the top nine floors served as prison cells as they were considered "escape-proof" due to the height, although in 1934 a prisoner managed to break free from the 21st floor and descended to freedom with a fire hose!
Things in Miami have certainly changed a lot since those early days--perhaps not for the better, but that's a whole other story!...
Note large American flag and giant painting of our founding forefathers prominently displayed, provoking feelings of pride and patriotism in prospective jurors who may be slightly grumpy, half asleep, under-caffeinated, or otherwise reluctant to be there after waking before sunrise and navigating the hostile streets of downtown Miami, locating an empty parking space and making it to the courthouse before 8:00am... it's your civic duty!

I hope you haven't dozed off after that short history lesson. You may even be thinking: "What the heck does all this have to do with makeup?" And the answer would be...well...nothing! Except I did wear makeup to the courthouse that day!
Now, for the real subject of today's post: swatches of my picks from the NARS Spring 2012 collection!

Lhasa eye shadow single
Lhasa is not your typical silvery-brown taupe, but it can still be considered part of the taupe family. It's a murky, grayish-silvery-lavender-taupe that reminds me of the color of the sky right before a thunderstorm. I wore it today with violet liner, which caused it to pull more purple-toned in the photos below. But if purple is not your thing, fear not, as Lhasa is quite an adaptable shade and will appear to be more of a neutral taupe if paired with a black or brown liner. I have to say I'm not lovin' this color with my skin tone -- I'm kind of naturally pallid with dark shadows around my eyes, and shades like this tend to emphasize those qualities. Nevertheless, it's a lovely shadow and the texture and pigmentation is great. No complaints!
The lighting is a little weird in these photos, as I had to take photos indoors due to rain clouds!
Not nearly as angry in real life as I look here ;-)
Paramaribo eye shadow duo
Miss Kitty snuck into this shot. Her eyes are a great match for Paramaribo!
Gaiety blush
Gaiety is a gorgeous blue-based bubblegum pink. At first glance it reminds me a bit of NARS Angelika or Desire, but I don't have those handy to compare. I also thought it might be like a more vibrant version of MAC's Well Dressed. Gaiety is the type of shade that I think would work equally well on warm and cool skin tones. Normally I am drawn to warm shades like peach and coral, but cooler pinks like this are really excellent at brightening the complexion. Time permitting, I'd like to do some comparisons, but I'm sure there are plenty available on the web by now! In the photos below I applied Gaiety fairly heavily so you could actually see the color. In real life I would go a little bit lighter for a more natural look.
Lipstick is Laura Mercier's Coral and the Paramaribo duo is on eyes. (I probably wouldn't choose to wear this blush with this eye look, but just did so for swatching purposes.)

Resolve... slipping...
ReplyDeleteThe Spring collection looks wonderful on you :) (Yes, even Lhasa. You're crazy if you think otherwise!) I've been doing a brilliant job of abstaining from this year's Winter and Spring collections so far, but you're making it rather difficult :P
Great review as always! May I ask which eyeliners you used with the Nars duo?
ReplyDeleteLhasa is wonderful shadow! :)
ReplyDeleteGosh, this has me nervous wondering when next I'll be called for jury duty! I guess the note about being drafted (although we're girls) does put things into perspective. The black and white tiling of the courthouse is retro (in a good way)
ReplyDeleteAs for NARS, both Paramaribo and Lhasa look beautiful on your eyes! They seem to bring out different colored flecks, depending on which color is on! And what a perfect match for Miss Kitty too! I was feeling practical and went for Lhasa only. The colors of Paramaribo swept me away, but I have a feeling I might not use it often. I'm waiting to see it in person :)
I was already certain I was going to get Lhasa but Paramaribo looks beautful as well and it's a gorgeous combination with your beautiful eye colour. x Klara
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a great post lovely!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating history the Miami Dade Courthouse has...and the pics are fantastic. Have enjoyed your post tremendously :)
Oh, and the makeup ain't too shabby either lol. In fact, I now need the eyeshadows.
Nina x
wow, I have similar eyes and the same thing with circles (deepness) showing up and I actually think that I will skip Lhasa based on your excellent review (Paramaribo will be it!). I like the insight in your personal life: we don't have Jury-duty over here and it looks like a way to have some say in your country's legal system...
ReplyDeleteKitty! ♥♥♥
ReplyDeleteI loved the courthouse history lesson and photographs (and realized I haven't been called for jury duty in 12 years), and I am trying very hard to prevent myself from buying Lhasa because I do NOT need another eyeshadow. As for your lack of love, I can see why, as Lhasa pales in comparison to the way that gold duo lights up your skin and makes your eyes look intensely green. I also noticed we have the same eye color! Blue with grey rims and an amber starburst around the pupil. I always thought I should avoid warm colors based on my cool undertones, but now my lemming has switched from Lhasa to Paramaribo.
The duo is really gorgeous on you! I am in love with Gaiety and so glad I decided to get it. I also enjoyed the history lesson :) My husband was called for jury duty and goes in tomorrow, though our building is not at all impressive as yours.
ReplyDeleteHi Rae, Thank you! :) At first I thought I could skip this collection, but the quality of the shadows is really excellent this time and Gaiety is such a pretty shade :)
ReplyDeleteHi Flyavested, Thank you! :) I used my drugstore liners this time – Almay’s liquid eyeliner pen in black and Almay Intense i-color eyeliner in Brown Topaz.
Hi Julia, It is great! Very nice pigmentation and texture :)
Hi Dovey, I always get a little nervous when I see that little post-card summons arrive in the mail! Thank you! :) Paramaribo and Lhasa could not be more different but they are both lovely and really nice quality! Did you like the Gaiety blush?
Hi Klara, Thank you for the kind comment! These are both great! Paramaribo might be a little warm for some, but can be applied more sheerly for a less intense golden glow! :)
Hi inthesweetshop, Thank you! I love history, though I guess 1925 isn’t that old, but in Miami we do not have that many historical buildings! These eye shadows are among the best I’ve seen from NARS :)
Hi birkinbagbeauty, Thank you! I think these are both versatile but if you tend to look better in warmer shades Paramaribo will be very flattering. Jury duty can be interesting and is a good way to learn more about the inner workings of the U.S. judicial system :)
Hi Zuzu’s Peals, Thank you! :) Jury duty summons seem a little random - some people get called quite often and others once or twice in a lifetime. In Florida they go by the DMV records so anyone with a license is fair game! These are definitely both worth a try, and they both have good texture and pigmentation. I think Paramaribo would look especially nice with indigo or navy blue liner. I will use Lhasa with black eyeliner next – it’s a great shade for a quick overall wash to wear to work! :)
Hi Martha, Thank you! :) Gaiety is so pretty, isn’t it? I love it too!
Hope your husband enjoys his jury duty service – he may want to bring some entertainment like a good book or if they allow it, an iPad/e-reader to keep him occupied in case he has to wait around for many hours! :)
You have such beautiful, delicate features! The duo is beautiful on you but it reminds me a lot of Star Sailor. And you convinced me to purchase Lhasa.. I can't recall the last time I was convinced to purchase a NARS single :) Hope jury duty wasn't too miserable!
ReplyDeleteHi RAEview, Aw, thank you so much! :) I don't have Star Sailor but agree it does look almost exactly the same in the pan! I hope you like Lhasa - it will look lovely on you! Jury duty was an interesting change from my usual routine :)
ReplyDeleteLhasa is beautiful on you, silly ;) Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOMG I love that duo and Lhasa.. I also liked the nail post you did with that nail polish.... Your swatches are always so gorgeous! I guess I'll be stopping by the NARS website soon!
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous as always! In love with the duo eyeshadows and trying to justify to myself whether I need another taupe eyeshadow (it is beautiful though isn't it).
ReplyDeleteI like so much Gaiety blush!!http://darlyst.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeleteHi Larie, Aw, thank you! You are so sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kriselie, Thanks very much! :) They are great shadows if you don't already have something similar. Very nice quality :)
Hi Pinkribbons, Thank you! :) You know what they say, a girl can never have too many taupes, but seriously I know what you mean, how many can we realistically use at one time? I probably don't need this, but I have a weakness for NARS!
Hi DarLyst, Gaiety is gorgeous!
Lhasa looks great on you! Looking at the pics of Gaiety makes me regret not ordering it with my Spring 2012 purchases!
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are really worth a 1000 words but I'm usually speechless after seeing the products on you or against a blooming flower. No one can capture a product quite like you and I find that I really look forward to your reviews and of course, your photos. Everything is simply fabulous! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, I need Lhasa and Gaiety and this post confirms it. What lipstick/gloss are you wearing with Gaiety? Looks so fresh and rosy!
ReplyDeleteYour photos never ceasse to amaze me...ever. Such an incredible talent. Meanwhile, you look straight-up *stunning* in that Paramaribo duo. Chartreuse-ish type green-golds (that barely makes sense..lol) are so hard to pull off, but you do it brilliantly. Love, love it all :) <33 xxx
ReplyDeleteHi Meg, Thank you! :) Gaiety is so pretty and wearable even though it looks quite bright in the pan. I believe it may be a permanent shade, but am not sure. I hope so! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, Thanks so much for the very kind words! I love the colors and shades of flowers and in nature & they just go so well with my next favorite thing--makeup! :)
Hi Sabrina, Lhasa and Gaiety will look fabulous on you! I am wearing Laura Mercier's Shimmer lipstick in "Coral" with a tiny bit of Estee Lauder's "High Gloss" in "Rose" it's a sheer pink-gold I got as a sample, but it's quite a nice shade! Thanks for stopping by! :)
Hi Rachel, Thanks so much! You are so right, chartreuse-ish colors are hard to pull off! I don't wear them often, but can sometimes get away with them if I use a light hand. The golden brown color here helps tone the green down!
Did you get Lhasa? I always love the eye looks you do and I think it will look gorgeous on you! :) xx
Stunning! You just clinched it for me with this post; while I had already earmarked the shadows, I was on the fence about the blush (I have Angelika, and even though I'm warmer toned, it still works on me - I'm just not loving the fine silvery glitter it holds). Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi ommorphiabeautybar, Thank you! You may be pleased with Gaiety - it has a very fine glow to it but no obvious shimmer :) I like it a lot! :)
ReplyDeleteLhasa is my sort of colour, LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteHi Cafe Bellini, It's a great neutral! I think it will become a NARS classic :)
ReplyDeleteI love love love Paramaribo- the lighter shade layered over the caramel from Madrague is perfect for the day.
ReplyDeleteHi Mopsy, That sounds pretty! I will check my stash to see if I have Madrague. Would love to try it out :)
ReplyDeleteYou look so beautiful! I don't like the look of Paramaribo in the pan at all but the shades look amazing on you. Most of the spring collections don't call to me but I fear summer won't be as easy to resist. Thanks for the lesson on civic duty and the gorgeous pictures as usual! :)
ReplyDeleteThe eye colours look very good swatches and your eye looks are beautiful, love the Paramaribo duo best.
ReplyDeleteI need Lhasa in my life...still waiting for it to arrive at my local Nordstrom. Ugh, I should have just ordered this!! Paramaribo is gorgeous with you eye color!
ReplyDeleteSorry about jury duty - luckily I was able to dodge it for another year!
Lhasa and Paramaribo look gorgeous on you! Great picks!
ReplyDeleteWow, I think Lhasa actually looks really lovely on you! It pairs nicely with your eye color. =)
ReplyDeleteHi Liz, Aw, thank you!! At first glance Paramaribo looks a little scary but it is surprisingly wearable :) I know summer will probably bring us lots of beautiful collections! I'd better start saving up!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jacqueline, Thank you so much! Paramaribo is a lovely palette :)
Hi Lexi, Thank you! Aw, it's too bad it has taken so long to get there. I ordered mine from Nars.com after seeing Cafe Makeup's review & swatches. I don't think the collection has arrived at my Nordstrom either... Lhasa will look great on you!
Hi Anonymous, Thank you very much for the kind comment!
Hi Maggie, Thank you!! :) I will have to give it another try soon. :)
I like this blush!I hope to try soon!
ReplyDeletehttp://darlyst.wordpress.com
Hi DarLyst, It's such a pretty pink! Definitely worth a try...
ReplyDeleteThey all look really pretty. Would go and take a look.

ReplyDeleteCalvin Klein Men's Core Sculpt Compression Short Sleeve Crew Tee
Hi Mina, Thank you!! Sorry to hear Nars isn't available in your country :(
ReplyDeleteYour history lesson made me laugh aloud, seriously! So funny. I did jury duty when I was 19. It was..."interesting"..ha. Anyway, you look flawless, as always. I've decided you can wear any eye shadow and make it sing. I love everything you do in your posts...it's always brilliant. Getting photo-bombed by your cat was the icing on the cake! <3 xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you Rachel for always being such a sweetheart! Yeah, jury duty was kinda fun/interesting in my 20's but now that I'm a lot older and avoid downtown Miami like the plague, it's not exactly something I look forward to! :) xx
ReplyDeleteI also own Lhasa and think it is one of the most beautiful and intriguing eyeshadows I own, may I ask what purple liner you paired with it? The look is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHi, Thanks very much! Lhasa is a great shade :) The liner was a violet-purple, but I wish I had typed in the name of the actual product ... It may have been Nars St. Mark's Place, but I have a few other violet liners, and they are all very similar -- Estee Lauder "Black Plum," Smashbox "Hope" and Sonia Kashuk "Purple Passion." I think that I layered the shadow over the liner which toned down the brightness of the liner.
