Laura Mercier Smoky Effects Set

This morning I was at the mall and one of my usual stops is the Nordstrom cosmetic department (no surprise, right?). Over the last few years it has become a little embarrassing, as when I walk in most the sales associates know me by name! Today I was there on a mission to pick up one item: a Laura Mercier metallic creme shadow in Burnished Copper, but this little "Smoky Effects" set behind the counter caught my eye. I love Caviar Sticks and the shade included in this set, Golden, is one I don't already have, and I figured I could use the little creme eye brush to go along with my new metallic creme shadow. Yes, folks, these are the little ways I like to convince myself I "need" something that I really don't need. But I digress...

The "Smoky Effects" set includes a full-size Caviar Stick in the shade Golden, a travel-size eye brush, and a mini Lip Glace (2.8g/0.1oz) in the shade Bare Pink. It retails for $39.50 (Caviar Sticks alone are priced at $24). I checked Sephora and Laura Mercier's website and did not see a Golden Caviar Stick listed, so I believe this shade may currently be exclusive to Nordstrom.

Bare Pink is a lovely milky petal pink shade. It is fairly sheer and would be nice to accompany a stronger eye look. Because I'm so pale, using this shade alone washes me out, so I'll probably try this over a darker or brighter lip pencil like NARS Velvet Matte. (See more photos and swatches of this shade at The Beauty Look Book.)

Golden is a dark sandy gold that calls to mind the color of a field of wheat. As you can see in the swatch below, when blended out it is not overly shimmery. Golden is the type of shade that can stand all on its own, but would also make a nice base underneath powder shadows. Caviar Sticks are similar to MAC's Shadesticks but they seem to have a softer texture that allows for easier blending, yet still sets to a smudge-proof finish once dry.

Below is Golden applied on lid and and smudged into the crease with some dark brown eyeliner and black mascara. It's fairly subtle and is a nice neutral that will complement a brighter lip, like a rosy pink or fuchsia.

I'm a fan of Laura Mercier's pull-apart lip brush and this little eye brush has similar tapered bristles, but is wider and comes to more of a sharp point. Its small size makes it perfect to throw in your makeup bag and take on trips. It comes with a clear plastic cover, but I wish it had a metal cap like L.M.'s pull-apart brushes.

  1. I think that set is brilliant, and such great value for the price :) I'm yet to try anything from LM bar the primer, do need to rectify this!

    1. Hi emmabovary, I thought it was a pretty good deal as well! LM has come out with some nice items lately -- her spring nail colors were all very pretty and the Caviar Sticks are nice :)

  2. Oooh, that color is gorgeous! I think it's a perfect little set - I've never seen these before! Thanks for the comparison to the MAC sticks; I've never tried either, but I think these sound more appealing.

    1. Hi Larie, I had not heard about this set and it was kind of hidden behind the counter. Not sure how long it's been around, but I'm glad to have found it because I love anything gold for eyes! :)

  5. The bare pink gloss is so pretty! I think Golden is a good shade as of late. It's natural enough not to cause a huge stir, while enough to add intrigue... Have you seen Hunger Games? There is one character (albeit male) who sports a gold liner (not that that really has anything to do with the topic on hand :)

    1. Hi Dovey, You are exactly right - it is natural but adds a little something :) I haven't seen Hunger Games yet but have heard a lot about it and must check it out soon -- I will look out for the character with the gold liner :)

  6. So pretty! I love the gold but the lip gloss will be too pale for me. You'll look beautiful in both though!

    1. Hi Liz, I like the gloss over a darker lipstick. By itself it's a little too light but I guess anyone who likes really pale shades might like it! I tried it out today over a mauvey-rose shade and it worked well. The texture is nice :)

    1. Hi Replica, Thank you :) It is a nice little set. I think the price is not too bad. I'm wondering if Golden will join the permanent range...

  8. Funny, I was recently interested in getting Burnished copper too, ever since I saw Pixiwoo's Sam using it on a model in their LA video. But I decided to control myself.. I have other shimmery reddish browns that could work just as well.. we'll see how long will-power this lasts ;)

    1. Hi Lakshmi, I know the metallic cream shadows have been out for quite a long time and I had not given them much thought until recently when I saw a video where someone was raving about the Platinum and the Burnished Copper shades, so I decided to get those two shades to try them out! :)

  10. How pretty - how did I pass this up at Nordstrom? All the SA's know me by name at my local Nordstrom. I'm not even embarrassed by this anymore and my husband has excepted this. They even know my daughter's name, I know I have issues hahaha

  11. Hi Lexi, lol that's funny :) I actually really like most of the Nordstrom SA's - they are usually very friendly and helpful. I don't think any of them know I have a blog & they probably wonder why I buy so much makeup! :)

  12. This is such a pretty set. I never would have known about it, if not for your lovely post. The set was hidden in all the confusion at my Nordstrom, no testers, not displayed. Anyway, wonderful swatches and pictures and I'm glad you found this gem and let us know,

    1. Hi Polarbelle, Thank you - it was the same at my Nordstrom -- no testers and it was hidden behind the main counter. It is a not a bad price I think :)
