Smashbox 15-Hour Cream Shadow and Maybelline Color Tattoo Comparison

Hi everyone -- I hope you are enjoying the last few hours of your weekend! My weekend always seem to go by so quickly whereas my workdays seem to drag on for an eternity. I constantly feel as if I need just one more day to get things done around the house... c'est la vie!

Yesterday I picked up a few more shades of Smashbox's new Limitless 15 Hour Wear Cream Shadows. (The first shade I purchased was Riches, swatched here.) These are great to use alone for quick all-over color, or as a base for other shadows. Upon trying these in store the first thing that struck me is how similar they are to Maybelline's Color Tattoo shadows. The packaging is a tad larger, but you probably won't even notice the difference. These shadows both have a comfortable texture that is not overly drying on the lids, yet sets to a long-lasting finish. Although the formulation seems to be very similar, because I have dry skin, I prefer the Smashbox texture as it is slightly smoother going on. One thing to note, some of the lighter Smashbox shades seemed to start out just a bit sheer so you may need to layer on more product to intensify the color. There are currently twelve shades to choose from on Smashbox.com, and I've also spotted these at Nordstrom and Sephora.
  • Smashbox Limitless: claims to be 15-hour wear, 0.17 oz product weight, $19
  • Maybelline Color Tattoo: claims to be 24-hour wear,  0.14 oz product weight, $6 (more or less)

  • Riches is a shimmery light sunny gold
  • Topaz is a softly shimmery sandy beige
  • Gemstone is a muted, dirty plum with silvery shimmer
  • Icon is a rich, deep warm brown with shimmer

Below are some comparisons with similar Color Tattoo shades:

Riches is a pretty, daffodil yellow-gold with shimmer. In comparison, Bold Gold is slightly darker and more honey toned, almost an antique gold. If you are a fan of golds it would be worth having both of these since they are quite different.

Gemstone is a dirty silvered brownish-plum, that could perhaps be considered a variation of taupe. Pomegranate Punk, on the other hand, is definitely not a taupe. As you can see below, it is darker, and has more red tones than Gemstone. Again, these are different enough to own both if you have a penchant for these types of shades. I would say Gemstone may be more versatile, though, being the more neutral of the two.

Topaz is a beautiful shimmery sand color. It is not really in the same category as Bad to the Bronze as it is so much lighter, but I thought I would show you how the two look side by side to give you an idea of how different they really are. These are not complex shades, but they are both lovely, basic neutrals. Based on swatches alone, I think that I prefer Topaz just because I always love this kind of pale, shimmery beige tone.

  2. Oh boy! Tell me about it... I wish the weekend was 3 days long. These cream shadows look amazing! I wonder why I never noticed these beauties.
Lately I've been loving cream shadows especially when getting ready for work, I just slap them on with some eyeliner.
    Thanks for the comparisons!

    1. Hi Michelle, Exactly! :) That's what I do too - just slap 'em on with some liner and I'm good to go!

  3. Wow, what a beautiful collection of creme shadows! I think my favorites from your collection are Smashbox Topaz and Maybelline bad to the bronze. When you wear the products, do you blend in more than one cream product together? Have you tried layering with powder?

    1. Hi Dovey, Thank you! I mostly use one shade alone with eyeliner and then a dark brown powder shadow on top of the liner to smoke it out. I also sometimes use two shades together -- one of the lighter shades all over the lid and then a darker one in the outer corner and crease :) It would be interesting to try completely layering/blending two shades together to make a new color!

  4. Gorgeous swatches! Topaz is just stunning. I have Bad to the Bronze, but they're definitely different enough to warrant both! And Gemstone? Love.

    1. Hi Amy, thank you! Yep Topaz is definitely a lot lighter. I'm wearing that one today. Gemstone is a nice color that's a little unique for a cream shadow :)

  5. Thanks for the comparisons! I have Bad to the Bronze and Pomegranate Punk, and love using them on days when I just need a quick swipe of color on my lids. Do the Smashbox cream shadows actually last 15 hours? I find that the Maybelline shadows usually start to crease after 8 hours, even with primer, on my lids.

    1. Hi C, I have super-dry skin and they did not crease on me at all, but the color did start to fade by the end of the day, after about 8 hours of wear. Also, the two colors I tried so far, Riches and Topaz are a little on the sheer side, but can be built up.

  6. I had a look at these, your swatches of Topaz have made my decision for me. It's such a gorgeous shade, and I love the look of gemstone as well.

    1. Hi emmabovary, I'm wearing Topaz on my eyes for the first time today, and in indoor lighting it seems to have kind of a dull finish. I think it looks prettier in sunlight when you can see the shimmer! It is a nice basic to have if you don't have something similar :)

  7. Great swatches! I love the new Smashbox Cream Shadows! I purchased Topaz a little while ago and love it so much that I went and ordered Gemstone as well :)

  8. Gorgeous pictures! Look at that Topaz. I could swear I heard somewhere that people are using Mabelline (the one in Taupe) as brow color.

    1. Hi ZP! Thank you :) I've been wearing Topaz for the last couple of days and to be honest I like the way the color looks on my arm better than it does on my eyes! :) oh well... I have the Maybelline Taupe but hadn't thought about it for brows, but now I think I'll give it a try! :)

  10. I've been reading your blog for quite a while, but this is my first comment. I just have to say, you photos are SO beautiful. The quality and detail of each one is stunning. And of course, the makeup is lovely as well! I just picked up almost all the Maybelline Color Tattoo shades last week--but for some reason, Pomegranate Punk did not jump out at me in-store, so I left it behind. Yeah. Really regretting that decision now after seeing your pretty swatches!

    1. Hi Becca, Thanks so much for the kind comment! :) Oh, I do that a lot - I'll leave something behind and then I see it on a blog or whatnot and decide I must have it, and then I'll go on the hunt for it again! :)

  12. They look eerily similar in the pots but are so different on swatches. Enjoy your goodies - bet they look stunning on you! (Also, extra happy weekend to you! The week does drag so.)

    1. Hi Liz, they do look similar in the pots! It's too bad you can't test drugstore items most of the time before buying, but I have been pretty happy with the Maybelline Color Tattoo shades I've picked up
Hope you are having a lovely weekend :) It's been raining all day where I am - not good blog photography weather!

  13. Icon looks like a beautiful colour ! Thank you so much for the comparisons, they don't sell Smashbox in Barcelona but now that I know Pomegranate Punk is quite a close dupe, I'm running to the drugstore !

  14. Such pretty colours! I think I prefer the Smashbox shades slightly more, but the Maybelline ones are really nice too. I actually didn't know Smashbox did cream shadows - must keep my eyes peeled for them on my next Sephora visit! :) Eve

  15. Amazing Photography!! Finally a review that really dissects and beautifully compares the products. I can finally feel like I am not going to get a surprise when opening up products from Smashbox that I purchase online. Especially when spending $19 on one shadow, you want to know the color you are purchasing. Thank you!! :)

    1. Hi Anonymous,
Thank you!! Yes, I agree it is important to have an idea of what to expect when spending so much on one shadow. I have had a few disappointments over the years when shopping online! Best of luck with your purchases :)
