Wantable September Subscription Makeup Box Review

Today I have to share with you the contents of my first ever subscription box! I've heard a lot about various subscription boxes over the years and have been intrigued, so I was excited to have the opportunity to sample Wantable's September makeup box, guest-curated by Jordan Liberty, makeup artist and creator of Liberty Republic and Give Good Face.

Before ordering your first box you are asked to complete a survey of your makeup preferences. My product preferences and beauty needs have changed over the years and one of the benefits of getting older is that I feel as if I have finally figured out exactly what does and doesn't work for me--which means less money wasted on products and colors that are beautiful to behold, but are terribly unflattering on me (like the brown and purple MAC lipstick shades I used to sport back in the 90s)!

Above is a screen shot of one of the survey questions, where you can see my preferences in highlighters. I enjoyed answering this questionnaire because it forced me to evaluate my likes and dislikes to determine precisely what colors and product types I do not want to receive. The survey was relatively detailed and specific, which made me feel more confident that I would receive products that would suit my tastes.

Each Wantable box contains four to six full-size products, which are hand-selected based on your preferences. Subscriptions are $36 a month or a single box can be purchased for $40 (The full retail value of the items I received amounted to $91). I said I "loved" nail polish, eyeshadow and highlighters, and was happy to see that products that represented each of these categories were included in this box, along with an eye primer, a tinted lip balm, and a sample card with two shades of Lisa Watier's Ombre Souffle Supreme

For me, the element of surprise is what makes subscription boxes so much fun. They are a convenient way to discover a new brand or a product that you might never have chosen for yourself, but that could end up as a new top favorite. I don't have any prior experience with the brands included in my September box and they are not available in my local department stores--it's time to break away from my norm and try something new!

Overall, my first subscription box has been a success! The Lisa Watier shadow is a basic charcoal with subtle shimmer, and will come in handy for everyday use. It is Paraben-free, which is always a plus. The highlighting fluid is a flattering peachy-gold that reminds me a bit of the NARS Orgasm Illuminator, but is much more opaque and metallic, but it can be blended out to a sheer finish. The tinted lip balm is a transparent, vibrant tangerine with a soft tangerine scent to match (and the packaging is really lovely!). The Cailyn eye primer has a smooth, blendable texture and looks as if it will make a nice base for loose or pressed powder shadows, and it can also double as a concealer (I haven't tested it yet, but it looks promising!). The LAQA & Co. nail polish is also quite nice and is the type of shade I would have chosen for myself. It has a Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP free, fast-drying formula and provides opaque coverage in one coat (I used two in the swatches above).

Are you a fan of monthly subscription boxes? I think they would make a nice gift for beauty-loving friends or family, and would also be useful to those who are just starting out with cosmetics and want to build up their makeup collection.

Disclosure: This post contains item(s) sent to Makeup Magpie for consideration for review.

  1. Nice selection of products and I'm glad to see that they include mostly full sizes. That lip balm looks gorgeous!

  2. If I ever decide to try a subscription box service, Wantable will be the one I go with. I like that you are able to provide such specific information and that info translates into what's in your individual box. In reading reviews, this subscription service consistently receives the highest satisfaction ratings of any of these types of services that I have seen reviewed.
    Thanks for sharing your experience!

    1. Thank you :) I've seen many subscription box reviews on YouTube and always thought it would be a fun thing to try! I especially like that with Wantable you can rest assured that you will never be sent any items from categories that you "disliked" in your survey.

  3. Gorgeous swatches! That lip balm and highlighter are especially stunning. I'm supposed to receive one for review as well and can't wait to see what's in the box. :)

    1. Hi Liz, Thank you! The color of the lip balm is amazing, right? I'm looking forward to your review! :)
