By Terry Ombre Blackstar Swatches & Face of the Day

After seeing By Terry's Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rock, a gorgeous plummy-taupe, worn in a recent video by the lovely Tanya Burr, I made a mental note to check my collection to see if I own that color. I had purchased a few shades online during a Friends & Family sale many months ago, set them aside in a drawer, and promptly forgot all about them. I was so happy to find Misty Rock among those I had chosen! I decided it was high time I do a post about these very beautiful shadow sticks and start putting them to use.

I am a major fan of shadow sticks in general--their convenience really appeals to me. Over the years I have collected quite a few of Laura Mercier's Caviar Sticks ($26), as well as some of Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks ($28). These products are both quite similar--indeed, some might say identical--to By Terry's, but there's just something about the Ombre Blackstars that gives them a more luxurious edge (or perhaps it is only my imagination trying to justify the over-$40-price tag).

These have a great, buttery texture, are long lasting, and come in the most flattering neutral shades with a beautiful, refined shimmer. The lighter shades work well as an inner corner highlight or all over the lid. The mid-tone shades can stand alone, and with the addition of some liner and mascara, are really all one needs to create a quick, polished eye look.

Below is a simple look I put together to do my usual Sunday grocery shopping and errands--nothing too exciting or complicated, but you'll see Misty Rock and a bit of Blond Opal in action. Lately, I've been sticking to warm nudes and peachy-pink lip colors. This was the first time I had ever used Illamasqua's Zygomatic, a lovely, although very subtle, dusty brown-pink shade with a dewy finish. I thought it coordinated well with Chanel's Rouge Allure in Indecise

  1. Aww you look really fancy! I think this is a look you can wear anywhere!

I had my eyes on Bronze Moon a while ago, and I got to swatch it (it was OOS). I just wasn't 100% sure about the larger sparkle in there. Do you get any fallout from that? Is it super obvious in real life?

    1. Hi Sunny, Thank you! It's a simple look, but perfect for a casual Sunday... I didn't have any fallout and the sparkles are not too obvious. I am wearing the Bronze Moon today at work :)

  2. GORGEOUS!! I love the sparkle and that you can see that on your eye! How would they last on oily lids like mine? The LM Caviar Sticks crease on me.

  3. Thanks so much Tracy!! :) I think if the LM Caviar Sticks crease on you these most likely will as well, as I think the formula is very similar. I have overly-dry skin and on me and haven't had any creasing so far, but I think people with oilier skin could have that issue with these.

  4. Beautiful look you have created there :) I'm a fan of the By Terry as well, I've been wondering what their new Aqua-Print stick shadows are like compared to these.

  5. Hi Clare, Thank you!! :) I hadn't heard about the Aqua-Print stick shadows - I looked them up just now and would love to try the more neutral shades like "Darling Muse" and "Peach Tornado" - they seem like they might be similar to the MAC and NARS shadow sticks. xx

  8. Such beautiful colours. I have not tried the By Terry versions although I'm a big fan of LM Caviar Sticks. I think the price point is holding me back a little. I'm sure I'll be getting one of these to try in the future though Bronze Moon looks too good to resist. I love your fotd, just beautiful :)

  9. Hi Jacqueline, Thanks so much! :) I waited quite a while to get these because I was also held back by the price point, but finally gave in to temptation during a friends & family sale a while back. I still think they are overpriced, but the colors are beautiful and the quality is great!
